Psalm 21
1 O Lord, in your strength the king rejoices,
and in your salvation how greatly he exults!
2 You have given him his heart's desire
and have not withheld the request of his lips. Selah
3 For you meet him with rich blessings;
you set a crown of fine gold upon his head.
4 He asked life of you; you gave it to him,
length of days forever and ever.
5 His glory is great through your salvation;
splendor and majesty you bestow on him.
6 For you make him most blessed forever;
you make him glad with the joy of your presence.
7 For the king trusts in the Lord,
and through the steadfast love of the Most High he shall not be
moved.
8 Your hand will find out all your enemies;
your right hand will find out those who hate you.
9 You will make them as a blazing oven
when you appear.
The Lord will swallow them up in his wrath,
and fire will consume them.
10 You will destroy their descendants from the earth,
and their offspring from among the children of man.
11 Though they plan evil against you,
though they devise mischief, they will not succeed.
12 For you will put them to flight;
you will aim at their faces with your bows.
13 Be exalted, O Lord, in your strength!
We will sing and praise your power.
I'll Fly Away
Some glad morning, when this life is o'er
I'll fly away
To a home on God's celestial shore
I'll fly away
I'll fly away, oh glory
I'll fly way
When I die, hallelujah by and by
I'll fly away
When the shadows of this life have gone
I'll fly away
Like a bird from prison bars has flown
I'll fly away
Chorus
Just a few more weary days and then
I'll fly away
To a land where joy shall never end
I'll fly away
Chorus
Who You Say I Am (Yes I Am)
Who am I that the highest King
Would welcome me
I was lost but he brought me in
Oh his love for me
Oh his love for me
Who the Son sets free
Oh is free indeed
I'm a child of God
Yes I am
Free at last
He has ransomed me
His grace runs deep
While I was a slave to sin
Jesus died for me
Yes he died for me
Who the Son sets free
Oh is free indeed
I'm a child of God
Yes I am
In my Father's house
There's a place for me
I'm a child of God
Yes I am
I am chosen
Not forsaken
I am who you say I am
You are for me
Not against me
I am who you say I am
He Will Hold Me Fast
When I fear my faith will fail
Christ will hold me fast
When the tempter would prevail
He will hold me fast
I could never keep my hold
Through life's fearful path
For my love is often cold
He must hold me fast
He will hold me fast
He will hold me fast
For my Savior loves me so
He will hold me fast
Those he saves are his delight
Christ will hold me fast
Precious in his holy sight
He will hold me fast
He'll not let my soul be lost
His promises shall last
Bought by him at such a cost
He will hold me fast
Chorus
For my life he bled and died
Christ will hold me fast
Justice has been satisfied
He will hold me fast
Raised with him to endless life
He will hold me fast
'Till our faith is turned to sight
When he comes at last
Chorus
What Sort of Man is This?
Steve Gilbertson
Matthew 8:18-34
Jesus is often seen as kind and gentle. And with good reason. But
there is another side of Jesus that is equally true: He is fierce and
demanding. We see this demonstrated in today's text. Whatever else
Jesus was, he was not just a "nice guy." He exercises an unquestioned
authority over nature, over evil, and over humanity.
18 Now when Jesus saw a crowd around him, he gave orders to go over
to the other side. 19 And a scribe came up and said to him, "Teacher, I will
follow you wherever you go." 20 And Jesus said to him, "Foxes have holes,
and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his
head." 21 Another of the disciples said to him, "Lord, let me first go and
bury my father." 22 And Jesus said to him, "Follow me, and leave the dead
to bury their own dead."
23 And when he got into the boat, his disciples followed him. 24 And behold,
there arose a great storm on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by
the waves; but he was asleep. 25 And they went and woke him, saying, “Save
us, Lord; we are perishing.” 26 And he said to them, “Why are you afraid, O you
of little faith?” Then he rose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was
a great calm. 27 And the men marveled, saying, “What sort of man is this, that
even winds and sea obey him?”
28 And when he came to the other side, to the country of the Gadarenes, two
demon-possessed men met him, coming out of the tombs, so fierce that no one
could pass that way. 29 And behold, they cried out, "What have you to do with
us, O Son of God? Have you come here to torment us before the time?" 30 Now a
herd of many pigs was feeding at some distance from them. 31 And the demons
begged him, saying, "If you cast us out, send us away into the herd of pigs." 32 And
he said to them, "Go." So they came and went into the pigs, and behold, the whole
herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned in the waters. 33 The
herdsmen fled, and going into the city they told everything, especially what had
happened to the demon-possessed men. 34 And behold, all the city came out to
meet Jesus, and when they saw him, they begged him to leave their region.
