Psalm 69

1    Save me, O God!
         For the waters have come up to my neck.
2    I sink in deep mire,
         where there is no foothold;
      I have come into deep waters,
         and the flood sweeps over me.
3    I am weary with my crying out;
        my throat is parched.
      My eyes grow dim
         with waiting for my God.

4    More in number than the haris of my head
        are those who hate me without cause;

      mighty are those who would destroy me,
         those who attack me with lies.
      What I did not steal
         must I now restore?
5    O God, you know my folly;
        the wrongs I have done are not hidden from you.

6    Let not those who hope in you be put to shame through me,
         O Lord God of hosts;
      let not those who seek you be brought to dishonor through me,
         O God of Israel.
7    For it is for your sake that I have borne reproach,
         that dishonor has covered my face.
8    I have become a stranger to my brothers,
         an alien to my mother's sons.

9    For zeal for your house has consumed me,
         and the reproaches of those who reproach you
      have fallen on me.
10   When I wept and humbled my soul with fasting,
         it became my reproach.
11   When I made sackcloth my clothing,
         I became a byword to them.
12   I am the talk of those who sit in the gate,
         and the drunkards make songs about me.

13   But as for me, my prayer is to you, O Lord.
         At an acceptable time, O God,
      in the abundance of your steadfast love answer
         me in your saving faithfulness.
14   Deliver me
         from sinking in the mire;
      let me be delivered from my enemies
         and from the deep waters.
15   Let not the flood sweep over me,
         or the deep swallow me up,
         or the pit close its mouth over me.

16   Answer me, O Lord, for your steadfast love is good;
         according to your abundant mercy, turn to me.
17   Hide not your face from your servant,
         for I am in distress; make haste to answer me.
18   Draw near to my soul, redeem me;
         ransom me because of my enemies!

19   You know my reproach,
         and my shame and my dishonor;
         my foes are all known to you.
20   Reproaches have broken my heart,
         so that I am in despair.
      I looked for pity, but there was none,
         and for comforters, but I found none.
21   They gave me poison for food,
         and for my thirst they gave me sour wine to drink.

22   Let their own table before them become a snare;
         and when they are at peace, let it become a trap.
23   Let their eyes be darkened, so that they cannot see,
         and make their loins tremble continually.
24   Pour out your indignation upon them,
         and let your burning anger overtake them.
25   May their camp be a desolation;
         let no one dwell in thier tents.
26   For they persecute him whom you have struck down,
         and they recount the pain of those you have wounded.
27   Add to them punishment upon punishment;
         may they have no acquittal from you.
28   Let them be blotted out of the book of the living;
         let them not be enrolled among the righteous.

29   But I am afflicted and in pain;
         let your salvation, O God, set me on high!

30   I will praise the name of God with a song;
         I will magnify him with thanksgiving.
31   This will please the Lord more than an ox
         or a bull with horns and hoofs.
32   When t he humble see it they will be glad;
         you who seek God, let your hearts revive.
33   For the Lord hears the needy
         and does not despise his own people who are prisoners.

34   Let heaven and earth praise him,
         the seas and everything that moves in them.
35   For God will save Zion
         and build up the cities of Judah,
      and people shall dwell there and possess it;
36     the offspring of his servants shall inherit it,
        and those who love his name shall dwell in it.

I Can't Even Walk

I thought number one would surely be me
I thought I could be what I wanted to be
I thought I could build on life's sinking sand
But now I can't even walk without you holding my hand

   Oh Lord, I can't even walk without you holding my hand
   The mountains too high and the valleys too wide
   Down on my knees that's where I learned to stand
   Oh Lord, I can't even walk without you holding my hand

I thought I could do a lot on my own
I thought I could make it all alone
I thought of myself as a mighty big man
But Lord I can't even walk without you holding my hand

   Chorus

I think I'll make Jesus my all and all
And if I'm in trouble on his name I'll call
If I didn't trust him, I'd be less of a man
'Cause Lord I can't even walk without you holding my hand

   Chorus

Oh Lord, I can't even walk without you holding my hand

My Hope is Built

My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus' blood and righteousness
I dare not trust the sweetest frame
But wholly lean on Jesus' name

   On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand
   All other ground is sinking sand
   All other ground is sinking sand

When darkness veils his lovely face
I rest on his unchanging grace
In every high and stormy gale
My anchor holds within the veil

   Chorus

His oath, his covenant, his blood
Support me in the whelming flood
When all around my soul gives way
He then is all my Hope and Stay

   Chorus

When he shall come with trumpet sound
Oh, may I then in him be found
Dressed in his righteousness alone
Faultless to stand before the throne!

   Chorus

In Christ Alone

In Christ alone my hope is found
He is my light, my strength, my song
This cornerstone, this solid ground
Firm through the fiercest drought and storm

  What heights of love, what depths of peace
  When fears are stilled, when strivings cease
  My Comforter, my All in All
  Here in the love of Christ I stand

In Christ alone, who took on flesh
Fullness of God in helpless Babe
This gift of love and righteousness
Scorned by the ones he came to save

   'Til on that cross as Jesus died

   The wrath of God was satisfied
   For every sin on him was laid
   Here in the death of Christ I live

There in the ground his body lay
Light of the world by darkness slain

Then bursting forth in glorious Day
Up from the grave he rose again

   And as he stands in victory

   Sin's curse has lost its grip on me
   For I am his and he is mine
   Bought with the precious blood of Christ

No guilt in life, no fear in death

This is the power of Christ in me
From life's first cry to final breath
Jesus commands my destiny

  No power of hell, no scheme of man
   Could ever pluck me from his hand
   'Til he returns or calls me home
   Here in the power of Christ I stand

Listen to Him
The World's True King: A Study in Matthew

Matthew 16:28-17:13
Steve Gilbertson

Having just passed the fulcrum point in Matthew's gospel, Jesus ascends a mountain.
Surrounded by Moses and Elijah, he reveals his glory to three stunned disciples. God
speaks from the cloud saying, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.
Listen to him." Indeed. Let us listen to what God has to say to us through this text.

Matthew 16:28-17:13

28 Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they
see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom."

17 And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James, and John his brother, and led
them up a high mountain by themselves. 2 And he was transfigured before them, and his
face shone like the sun, and his clothes became white as light. 3 And behold, there appeared
to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him. 4 And Peter said to Jesus, "Lord, it is good that we
are here. If you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you and one for Moses and one
for Elijah." 5 He was still speaking when, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice
from the cloud said, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him."
6 When the disciples heard this, they fell on their faces and were terrified. 7 But Jesus came
and touched them, saying, "Rise, and have no fear." 8 And when they lifted up their eyes, they
saw no one but Jesus only.

9 And as they were coming down the mountain, Jesus commanded them, "Tell no one the vision,
until the Son of Man is raised from the dead." 10 And the disciples asked him, "Then why do the
scribes say that first Elijah must come?" 11 He answered, "Elijah does come, and he will restore all
things. 12 But I tell you that Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but did to
him whatever they pleased. So also the Son of Man will certainly suffer at their hands." 13 Then
the disciples understood that he was speaking to them of John the Baptist.
