Psalm 136

1   Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good,
        for his steadfast love endures forever.
2   Give thanks to the God of gods,
        for his steadfast love endures forever.
3   Give thanks to the Lord of lords,
       for his steadfast love endures forever;

4   to him who alone does great wonders,
       for his steadfast love endures forever;
5   to him who by understanding made the heavens,
       for his steadfast love endures forever;
6   to him who spread out the earth above the waters,
       for his steadfast love endures forever;
7   to him who made the great lights,
       for his steadfast love endures forever;
8   the sun to rule over the day,
       for his steadfast love endures forever;
9   the moon and stars to rule over the night,
       for his steadfast love endures forever;

10   to him who struck down the firstborn of Egypt,
       for his steadfast love endures forever;
11   and brought Israel out from among them,
       for his steadfast love endures forever;
12   with a strong hand and an outstretched arm,
       for his steadfast love endures forever;
13   to him who divided the Red Sea in two,
       for his steadfast love endures forever;
14   and made Israel pass through the midst of it,
       for his steadfast love endures forever;
15   but overthrew Pharaoh and his host in the Red Sea,
       for his steadfast love endures forever;
16   to him who led his people through the wilderness,
       for his steadfast love endures forever;

17   to him who struck down great kings,
       for his steadfast love endures forever;
18   and killed mighty kings,
       for his steadfast love endures forever;
19   Sihon, king of the Amorites,
       for his steadfast love endures forever;
20   and Og, king of Bashan,
       for his steadfast love endures forever;
21   and gave their land as a heritage,
       for his steadfast love endures forever;
22   a heritage to Israel his servant,
       for his steadfast love endures forever.

23   It is he who remembered us in our low estate,
       for his steadfast love endures forever;
24   and rescued us from our foes,
       for his steadfast love endures forever;
25   he who gives food to all flesh,
       for his steadfast love endures forever.

26   Give thanks to the God of heaven,
       for his steadfast love endures forever.

For He is Good (Psalm 118)

   For he is good, for he is good
   His steadfast love endures forever
   For he is good, for he is good
   His steadfast love endures forever

   O give thanks to the Lord (4x)
   (repeat all above)

(Leader): Let all the women say
(Ladies): "His steadfast love endures forever!"
(Leader): Let all the men-folk say
(Men): "His steadfast love endures forever!"
(Leader): Let those who fear the Lord say

(All): "His steadfast love endures forever!"

   Chorus

Graves Into Gardens

I searched the world but it couldn't fill me
Man's empty praise and treasures that fade
Are never enough
Then you came along and put me back together
And every desire is now satisfied here in your love

   Oh there's nothing better than you
   There's nothing better than you
   Lord there's nothing
   Nothing better than you

I'm not afraid to show you my weakness
My failures and flaws
Lord you've seen them all
And you still call me friend
'Cause the God of the mountain
Is the God of the valley
And there's not a place
Your mercy and grace won't find me again

   Chorus

You turn mourning to dancing
You give beauty for ashes
You turn shame into glory
You're the only one who can

You turn graves into gardens
You turn bones into armies
You turn seas into highways
You're the only one who can
You're the only one who can

   Chorus

O Come Emmanuel

O come, O come, Emmanuel
And ransom captive Israel
That mourns in lonely exile here
Until the Son of God appear

   Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
   Shall come to you, O Israel

O come, thou Key of David, come
And open wide our heavenly home
Make safe the way that leads on high
And close the path to misery

   Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
   Shall come to you, O Israel

O come, thou Dayspring, come and cheer
Our spirits by thine advent here
Disperse the gloomy clouds of night
And death's dark shadows put to flight

   Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
   Shall come to you, O Israel

O come, Desire of nations, bind
In one the hearts of all mankind
Oh, bid our sad divisions cease
And be yourself our King of Peace

   Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
   Shall come to you, O Israel

O Lord, How Long?
Habakkuk: "I Will Quietly Wait" (Advent 2022)
Habakkuk 1:1-17
Steve Gilbertson

Little is known about the prophet Habakkuk, but his message is as timely
today as it was when he first wrote the book which bears his name. Like us,
he lived in a time when "violence...,strife and contention" was rampant. He
asked God to do something about it. And God did, but not in the way Habakkuk
expected. His posture of faith in the face of fearsome times is an example for
us to follow today.

Habakkuk 1:1-17 (ESV)

1 The oracle that Habakkuk the prophet saw.

2  O Lord, how long shall I cry for help,
     and you will not hear? Or cry to you “Violence!”      and you will not save?
3  Why do you make me see iniquity,
     and why do you idly look at wrong? Destruction and violence are before me;      strife and contention arise.
4  So the law is paralyzed,
     and justice never goes forth. For the wicked surround the righteous;      so justice goes forth perverted.

5  “Look among the nations, and see;
     wonder and be astounded. For I am doing a work in your days      that you would not believe if told.
6  For behold, I am raising up the Chaldeans,
     that bitter and hasty nation, who march through the breadth of the earth,      to seize dwellings not their own.
7  They are dreaded and fearsome;
     their justice and dignity go forth from themselves.
8  Their horses are swifter than leopards,
     more fierce than the evening wolves;     their horsemen press proudly on. Their horsemen come from afar;     they fly like an eagle swift to devour.
9  They all come for violence,
     all their faces forward.     They gather captives like sand.
10 At kings they scoff,
     and at rulers they laugh. They laugh at every fortress,      for they pile up earth and take it.
11 Then they sweep by like the wind and go on,
     guilty men, whose own might is their god!”

12 Are you not from everlasting,
   O Lord my God, my Holy One?     We shall not die. O Lord, you have ordained them as a judgment,     and you, O Rock, have established them for reproof.
13 You who are of purer eyes than to see evil
     and cannot look at wrong, why do you idly look at traitors      and remain silent when the wicked swallows up     the man more righteous than he?
14 You make mankind like the fish of the sea,
     like crawling things that have no ruler.
15 He brings all of them up with a hook;
     he drags them out with his net; he gathers them in his dragnet;      so he rejoices and is glad.
16 Therefore he sacrifices to his net
     and makes offerings to his dragnet; for by them he lives in luxury,      and his food is rich.
17 Is he then to keep on emptying his net
     and mercilessly killing nations forever?

2 I will take my stand at my watchpost
and station myself on the tower,
and look out to see what he will say to me,
and what I will answer
concerning my complaint.
